Rainfall Activity to Intensify Across Odisha from July 22; Heavy Showers Likely During Bahuda Yatra

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is expected to experience a fresh spell of widespread rainfall beginning July 22 as a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Odisha–West Bengal–Jharkhand border region, bringing increased monsoon activity across the state.

Weather expert Dr. Sarat Sahu said the circulation is expected to strengthen into a low-pressure area by July 24, coinciding with the Bahuda Yatra, the return journey of Lord Jagannath and his siblings during the annual Rath Yatra festival.

If the system develops as anticipated, Puri is likely to receive heavy rainfall on Bahuda Yatra day. Apart from Puri, rainfall is expected to intensify across Odisha, with north Odisha likely to bear the brunt of the wet spell. Coastal and southern districts are also expected to witness widespread showers.

Dr. Sahu further noted that another cyclonic circulation may form between July 27 and 30, which could keep rainfall activity active across the state until the end of the month. The prevailing active monsoon trough is also expected to support the ongoing wet conditions.

Some areas may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with precipitation reaching up to 100 mm. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely in several districts during this period.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall over north Odisha on July 22 and 23. Districts including Sundargarh, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj are expected to receive heavy showers, while parts of coastal and south Odisha are also likely to experience moderate to heavy rain.

On Monday, several places across the state recorded notable rainfall. Kendujhar received 30.6 mm of rain, followed by Paradip with 25.4 mm and Titlagarh with 17 mm, indicating strengthening monsoon activity over Odisha.
