Three Killed In Truck Crash On NH-16 In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: At least three people, including a young woman, were killed and another sustained critical injuries after a speeding truck rammed into a bike and a scooter on National Highway-16 in Bhubaneswar on Saturday evening, police said.

The tragic accident took place on the overbridge near Fire Station Square while the victims were travelling from the Rasulgarh side of the city. According to preliminary reports, a truck coming from behind hit the two-wheelers before fleeing the scene.

The impact of the collision threw the riders onto the road, causing panic among commuters and passers-by. Local residents and motorists rushed to rescue the injured and moved them to the roadside before fire services and police personnel arrived at the spot and launched rescue operations.

All the injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared three persons dead. Another victim is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition. The identities of the deceased were yet to be confirmed at the time of filing this report.

The accident triggered massive traffic congestion on the busy highway stretch as angry locals gathered at the site, alleging frequent road mishaps on the national highway due to poor regulation of heavy vehicle movement.

Police deployed additional personnel to control the situation and pacify the agitated crowd. Efforts are underway to trace the absconding truck driver, while an investigation into the incident has been initiated.

The mishap has once again raised serious concerns over road safety and the movement of heavy vehicles within the Odisha capital.
