Shreyas Iyer Hospitalised in Sydney After Rib Injury During ODI Match

New Delhi: India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney after sustaining a left rib cage injury during Saturday’s match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
According to sources cited by IANS, Iyer was rushed to the hospital and admitted to the ICU after his blood pressure and other vitals began fluctuating dangerously. He is expected to undergo further medical assessment by specialists on Monday, who will decide the next course of treatment.

“At the hospital, scans revealed internal bleeding caused by the impact of the fall. Iyer was immediately admitted to prevent the risk of infection spreading to vital organs,” a source informed. “Depending on the specialists’ evaluation, he may remain in the ICU for a few more days or be kept under close observation for about a week. His family has been informed and may travel to Sydney if required,” the source added.
The incident occurred during the 33rd over of Australia’s innings, when wicketkeeper Alex Carey attempted a pull shot off Harshit Rana. Fielding at backward point, Iyer sprinted backward and dived full length to complete a brilliant tumbling catch near deep third man.
While the catch gave India a crucial breakthrough, Iyer appeared to be in severe pain, clutching his left side as teammates and physio Kamlesh Jain rushed to assist him. He walked off the field with support and did not return for the rest of the match.
Despite the injury scare, India comfortably chased down Australia’s total of 236, thanks to an unbeaten 168-run partnership between Rohit Sharma (121 not out) and Virat Kohli (74 not out).
Iyer, 31, is not part of India’s T20I squad for the upcoming series against Australia starting Wednesday, but his availability for future assignments will depend on his recovery progress in Sydney.
