Yellow Warning Issued for Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds across multiple districts of Odisha for Tuesday afternoon and evening.

According to the Midday Weather Bulletin from the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, thunderstorms with lightning and winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are very likely at one or two places in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts. Several other districts—including Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati—are also expected to experience thunderstorms with winds of 30–40 kmph.

Light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers are likely at isolated places across 24 districts, while the rest of the state is expected to remain dry. Meanwhile, hot and humid conditions are forecast to persist in coastal districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Rainfall has already been recorded in some areas, with Khajuripada in Kandhamal receiving 3 cm. Parts of Mayurbhanj—including Tiring, Chandua Kuliana, Kusumi, Suliapada, Bahalda, Bangiriposi, and Chandanpur—recorded rainfall between 1 and 2 cm, while scattered areas in Ganjam and Keonjhargarh received around 1 cm.

Temperature trends showed a noticeable drop of about 3°C in parts of South Interior Odisha, while a slight rise was observed in South Coastal regions. Titilagarh recorded the highest maximum temperature at 42.5°C, whereas Keonjhar reported the lowest minimum temperature at 19.1°C.

Outlook for the Coming Days

The IMD has forecast continued thunderstorm activity over the next few days. Between April 22 and 23, similar conditions with gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are likely over Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, coastal, and southern districts, with hot and humid weather persisting along the coast.

On April 23–24, thunderstorms are expected over northern and coastal regions, while isolated heatwave conditions may occur in Jharsuguda, Balangir, and Angul. Warm night conditions are also likely in parts of Kalahandi, Sundergarh, Bolangir, and Sambalpur.

From April 24 to 26, thunderstorm activity is expected to shift towards southern and coastal districts, while heatwave conditions may continue in western and central regions, including Jharsuguda, Balangir, Kandhamal, and Angul.

Between April 26 and 28, thunderstorm activity is likely to be limited to districts such as Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri, with no major warnings issued. No significant weather changes are expected between April 28 and May 1.

Day temperatures across Odisha are likely to remain largely unchanged for the next four days before dropping by 2–3°C.

Bhubaneswar Forecast

For Bhubaneswar, the IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky over the next 24 hours, with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 37°C, while the minimum may remain close to 27°C.

The IMD has advised residents in the affected districts to remain alert and take precautions against lightning strikes and strong winds.
