Woman Killed in Wild Elephant Attack in Dhenkanal’s Hindol Forest Division

Bhubaneswar: In a tragic incident highlighting the escalating human-elephant conflict in Odisha, a 55-year-old woman lost her life after being attacked by a wild elephant in the Hindol forest division of Dhenkanal district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Jayanti Sahu, a resident of Dhundinali village under Ward No. 5 of Hindol NAC.

According to sources, Sahu had gone to her cashew orchard in the early hours when a lone tusker suddenly appeared. With no time to escape, she was attacked by the elephant, which reportedly trampled her from the chest downwards, causing severe injuries.
Hearing her cries, local villagers and forest department personnel rushed to the spot and immediately shifted her to the Hindol Sub-Divisional Hospital. However, doctors declared her brought dead.
The incident has once again brought attention to the growing human-elephant conflict in the Hindol region. Locals allege that such encounters have become increasingly frequent, leading to repeated loss of both human and animal lives.
Residents have urged authorities to implement a long-term and effective solution to prevent such tragedies and ensure the safety of people living in forest-adjacent areas.
