Silver Prices Fall Ahead of Diwali; Rates Drop by ₹17,000 in Two Days

New Delhi, October 23: Silver prices have witnessed a sharp decline ahead of Diwali, with futures prices on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) falling below ₹2 lakh per kilogram. The precious metal has reportedly become cheaper by around ₹17,000 per kg over two days, offering potential relief to buyers during the festive season.

Contrary to expectations of rising gold and silver prices during the festive period, the latest market movement has seen silver prices retreat significantly, raising questions about whether the decline will create a favourable buying opportunity for consumers.

Silver Loses Nearly ₹17,000 in Two Days

On Friday, December silver futures on the MCX fell by around 3.5 per cent to ₹1,92,800 per kilogram. The price dropped by approximately ₹7,000 in a single session, taking the reported decline over two days to nearly ₹17,000 per kg.

However, futures prices on the commodity exchange may differ from retail silver rates, which vary depending on local market conditions, taxes and other applicable charges.

Buying Opportunity Ahead of Diwali?

Silver coins, jewellery and items used in religious rituals are traditionally purchased during Diwali. The recent price correction could provide some relief to consumers planning festive purchases.

However, it remains uncertain whether prices will decline further or rebound ahead of the festival. Buyers should check the prevailing retail rate with local jewellers before making a purchase.

Global Markets and Supply Influence Prices

India is a major consumer of silver, making domestic prices sensitive to international market movements, import costs, currency fluctuations and supply-demand dynamics. Government decisions affecting silver imports may also influence domestic availability, although the actual impact depends on prevailing market conditions.

Is It the Right Time to Invest in Silver?

Despite the recent decline, lower prices do not guarantee immediate investment gains. Silver prices can remain volatile, influenced by global economic conditions, industrial demand and investor sentiment.

Financial experts generally advise investors to consider their financial goals, risk tolerance and investment horizon before making decisions. Consumers purchasing silver for festive or personal use should also distinguish between exchange-traded futures prices and the final retail price they pay.
