Onion Prices Rise to Rs 70/kg in Odisha

Onion prices have surged across Odisha, reaching around Rs 70 per kg in several markets due to a sharp decline in supply.
Markets in Baleshwar, Brahmapur, Balangir and Cuttack have reported a significant increase in onion prices. Traders said arrivals have dropped considerably, putting pressure on retail rates.

At Cuttack’s Chhatra Bazar, traders said the market previously received around five to six onion trucks every day. However, only one or two trucks are now arriving occasionally.
Odisha relies heavily on onions brought in from other states, particularly Maharashtra, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh. With local production limited to parts of western Odisha and Angul, any disruption in outside supplies can quickly push up prices.

Traders have attributed the recent shortage partly to weather-related problems affecting onion cultivation and supplies in Maharashtra.
Retailers said volatile wholesale prices are making it difficult to predict the market, while consumers are bearing the impact of the rising rates.
Experts expect onion prices to soften after mid-September if supplies improve.
