Odisha Receives ₹5.78 Crore Central Assistance for Bamboo Sector

Odisha has received ₹5.78 crore in central assistance over the past three years to develop its bamboo sector under the National Bamboo Mission (NBM), with support extending from plantation and processing to skill development and market promotion.

The assistance has already translated into a network of bamboo-related facilities across the state. Under the mission, Odisha has set up 16 bamboo nurseries, five treatment and preservation units, 26 product development and processing units and 10 bamboo market infrastructure facilities. Bamboo plantations have also been undertaken across 1,049 hectares of non-forest land.

Skill development has formed another part of the intervention. As many as 3,747 people have been trained under the National Bamboo Mission, while around 16 workshops, seminars, trade fairs and exhibitions have been organised to encourage skills, employment and entrepreneurship in the sector.

The Centre has also extended financial support to bamboo-based businesses through the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP). During the last three years, ₹11.71 lakh has been released as margin money subsidy for bamboo-based enterprises in Odisha.

The figures were provided by Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Shobha Karandlaje in response to a question raised in the Rajya Sabha by MP Dilip Kumar Ray.

The National Bamboo Mission covers the broader bamboo value chain, with interventions focused on plantation, processing, skill development, product development and market promotion.

The central assistance is intended to strengthen the bamboo sector in Odisha while supporting entrepreneurship and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for artisans and rural communities.
