Odisha Minister Rejects US Travel Advisory, Calls State Peaceful

Bhubaneswar: The United States has issued a travel advisory urging its citizens to exercise increased caution while visiting India, citing risks related to crime and terrorism. Among the regions flagged for heightened caution is Odisha, along with parts of central and eastern India, due to the presence of Maoist extremist groups.

The advisory specifically mentions areas stretching from eastern Maharashtra and northern Telangana to western West Bengal as high-risk zones. It highlights that Maoist groups, known for targeting security forces and government officials, remain active in the rural belts of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.

Reacting sharply to the advisory, Odisha Minister Krushna Chandra Patra defended the state’s law and order situation, asserting that Odisha is a peaceful and safe place for both residents and visitors. Speaking to reporters, the minister questioned the rationale behind the advisory and drew comparisons with incidents of violence in the United States.

“Is there no disturbance in America? Riots happen there. Gun violence is a regular occurrence. Wasn’t there an attack on Trump? Wasn’t there an attack on the White House?” Patra said, implying that no country is entirely free from security challenges.

He strongly reiterated that Odisha is a peace-loving state with a low crime rate. “You won’t find an atmosphere like this anywhere else in the world. If any issues arise, we handle them firmly. Our government does not tolerate criminal activities, and strict action is always taken. People in Odisha are living peacefully,” he added.

The minister’s comments come amid growing concerns over international perceptions of security in certain Indian states. As the advisory continues to attract attention, the Odisha government appears keen to assure both residents and visitors that the state remains safe and well-governed.
