Odisha Launches ₹10-Crore Poultry Scheme to Boost Egg Production

The Odisha government has launched a new poultry farming scheme aimed at increasing annual egg production to 1,000 crore by 2036. Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik announced the Commercial Layer Poultry Farming Scheme on Friday during a World Egg Day programme.

The scheme offers subsidies of up to ₹10 crore for establishing modern, automated commercial layer and pullet farms with more than 25,000 birds. Advance subsidies through a mirror account will also help reduce the interest burden on entrepreneurs taking bank loans.

Mallik said the state had provided around ₹512 crore in financial assistance to poultry farmers and entrepreneurs over the past two-and-a-half years. Odisha currently produces approximately 1.12 crore eggs daily through 189 commercial layer farms, semi-commercial farms and backyard poultry units.

For 2026-27, the government is providing 100% financial assistance to 43,000 beneficiaries for backyard poultry farming under the Livestock Prosperity Scheme. Duck farming is eligible for assistance of up to ₹2.64 lakh, while semi-commercial layer farms with 1,000–4,000 birds can receive 50–60% assistance, capped at ₹19.74 lakh. Large layer farm entrepreneurs can also avail themselves of assistance of up to ₹1 crore under the Mukhyamantri Krushi Udyog Yojana.

Odisha’s annual per capita egg availability stands at 87, below the national average of 106. The government aims to match the national average by 2029 and position Odisha among India’s top five egg-producing states.
