Mother Kills Two Children with Axe, Attempts Suicide in Jharsuguda

Bhubaneswar: In a shocking and tragic incident, a woman allegedly killed her two children with an axe before attempting to take her own life in Tangarpali village under the Airport police station limits in Jharsuguda district late on Saturday night.

According to police sources, the family had gone to bed after dinner. Around midnight, the accused, identified as Ranjita Oram, reportedly woke her husband and asked him to step outside. As soon as he went out, she locked the door from inside.

She then allegedly attacked her daughter, Jijnyasha Oram, and son, Vibhanshu Oram, with an axe, killing both on the spot. Following the incident, she reportedly slit her own throat with a knife in an attempt to commit suicide.

Sensing something was wrong, the husband, with the help of a neighbour, broke open a window and entered the house. He found both children dead and his wife critically injured.

Ranjita was immediately rushed to the Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital and later shifted to VIMSAR, Burla, where she remains in critical condition.

The motive behind the horrific act is yet to be ascertained. Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation. A scientific team may be called in to assist further if required.
