India Notifies ₹1.27 Lakh Crore Semicon 2.0 Scheme

The government has officially notified the Semicon India Programme 2.0, allocating ₹1.27 lakh crore to strengthen and expand the country’s semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the initiative aims to establish India as a key player in the global semiconductor value chain, covering areas from wafer fabrication to chip production.
Addressing a press briefing in New Delhi, Vaishnaw said India could account for nearly 10% of the global semiconductor market in the coming years. He added that the country is expected to take on a larger role in global semiconductor manufacturing and design.

The minister said the progress of projects under Semicon 1.0, particularly their movement from government approval to construction and commercial production, has increased confidence among global industry players.
According to Vaishnaw, India’s skilled talent pool, stable policies and improving ease of doing business are attracting major semiconductor investments. The government’s broader goal is to make India an essential part of the global chip supply chain.
Vaishnaw also stressed that building a complete semiconductor ecosystem will be crucial for ensuring the industry’s long-term growth over the next five decades.
