IMD warns of intense rainfall across Odisha, orange alert issued for these districts

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rain for Odisha for the next two days as cyclonic circulation is active over the region, resulting in incessant rain.

As per IMD’s prediction, cyclonic circulation is active over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andhra Pradesh coast. Due to which, rainfall activity is likely to continue over most parts of Odisha.

IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Kataka and Mayurbhanj while Yellow Alert for 21 districts that are likely to receive heavy rainfall.

Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is very likely to continue at many places over the districts of Malkanagiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nawarangpur, Baragada, Boudh, Nayagada, Kataka, Khorda and Puri for next 3 hours.

Rain has been continuously showering on the Twin City since Thursday.

Weather officials have predicted a possibility of formation of two back-to-back low-pressure systems during the next one week.

A fresh cyclonic circulation is already active over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh. It may soon take the form of a low-pressure area, with a greater impact on north Odisha.

The second cyclonic circulation is also likely to develop over north-west Bay of Bengal by August 12. The systems might further trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall over north and coastal Odisha.

From the third week of August, its effect might also spread across the state.

With the possibility of two low-pressure systems expected within a week, Odisha could witness prolonged spells of rainfall.

People are advised to keep a watch on the weather for worsening conditions and plan accordingly for their safety.
