Hirakud Dam Reopens to Tourists After 24-Day Security Ban

Bhubaneswar: The iconic Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district has reopened to tourists following the lifting of a 24-day restriction that was imposed due to heightened security concerns. The restriction, which came into effect on May 9, was introduced as a precautionary measure amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan.

With the security review now complete, the district administration, in coordination with security agencies, has decided to allow public access to the dam premises once again. Tourists will be able to visit all accessible areas of the dam, excluding certain restricted zones that remain off-limits for safety and operational reasons.

Officials clarified that the restriction was temporary and aimed solely at ensuring public safety. The administration has now implemented a comprehensive security protocol, equipping security personnel at the dam with modern arms, including Light Machine Guns (LMGs), and advanced surveillance systems to maintain strict vigilance.

The Hirakud Dam, Asia’s longest earthen dam and a major tourist attraction in Odisha, is expected to see a surge in footfall following the lifting of the ban. The authorities have urged visitors to cooperate with security personnel and follow all safety guidelines during their visit.
