Heatwave Alert: Ganjam Schools Shut for Three Days, Exams to Continue with Safety Measures

Berhampur: In response to the intensifying heatwave sweeping across Odisha, the Ganjam district administration has announced the closure of all schools from April 21 to April 23 to ensure student safety.

Officials stated that the decision was taken due to rising temperatures posing significant health risks, particularly to children. Several parts of the state are currently experiencing extreme heat conditions, with at least 14 locations recording temperatures of 40°C or above on Sunday. Jharsuguda registered the highest temperature at 43.3°C.

Despite the suspension of regular classes, authorities have clarified that examinations will proceed as scheduled in accordance with guidelines issued by the Odisha School Education Programme Authority. Schools have been instructed to make necessary arrangements at examination centres, including the availability of safe drinking water, oral rehydration solution (ORS), and compulsory first-aid facilities to handle any heat-related emergencies.

The administration also confirmed that student enrolment activities will continue during the closure period.

Officials emphasized that the temporary shutdown is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting students as the heatwave conditions are expected to persist in the coming days.
