Five Young Orangutans Rescued in Odisha Forest

Forest officials rescued five young orangutans from the Bichitrapur casuarina forest near Badapai village in Odisha’s Balasore district on Tuesday.
Villagers spotted the animals in the forest in the morning and alerted the Udaipur forest officials. A team soon reached the area and safely brought all five orangutans to the Udaipur forest section office for observation.
Prakash Chand Gogineni, Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF)-cum-Field Director of Similipal Tiger Reserve, said the age and sex of the animals were yet to be determined. A medical team has also been asked to examine their health and provide treatment if required.

Officials suspect the orangutans may have been abandoned by poachers or wildlife suppliers who were unable to transport them further. However, the exact circumstances surrounding their presence in the forest will be known only after a detailed investigation.
The forest department plans to increase surveillance in the area and search the interior parts of the casuarina forest to check whether any more animals are present.
Since orangutans are native to Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Malaysia, their discovery in Balasore has raised questions about how they reached the coastal forest and where they came from. Their future rehabilitation or relocation will be decided after medical examination and identification.
