Five Killed as Wedding Party Car Plunges Into Pond in Dhenkanal

Dhenkanal: Five members of a wedding party lost their lives after the car they were travelling in reportedly skidded off the road and plunged into a pond near Chhatia village under Dhenkanal Sadar police limits late Tuesday night.

According to preliminary information, seven friends from Bangurasinh village under Motanga police station had travelled to Indipur village to attend a wedding. While returning home after the ceremony, the vehicle allegedly went out of control near Chhatia village and fell into a nearby pond.

Two occupants, identified as Bablu and Shibu, managed to escape by breaking open the car door and swimming to safety.

After receiving information about the mishap, local residents rushed to the spot and launched a rescue operation. They pulled the remaining five occupants out of the submerged vehicle, but all of them had already succumbed.

The deceased have been identified as Chandrakant Swain, who was driving the car, along with Abinash Sahu, Rakesh Sahu, Sriram Sahu and Abhijit Sahu.

Police recovered the bodies and sent them to the District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem examination. The tragic incident has left the victims’ families and the entire village in deep mourning.

A case has been registered, and police have begun an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the fatal accident.
