D2M: Live TV on Phones Without Internet Soon

Smartphone users may soon be able to watch live TV without internet, a data pack, recharge or even an active SIM, through Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology.

According to an e4m report, Prasar Bharati may issue an RFP within the next month to select companies for the commercial rollout of D2M broadcasting. The process has faced repeated tender delays.

D2M works like a traditional TV antenna, sending broadcast signals directly to compatible smartphones. This could allow users to watch live news, cricket and other programmes without mobile data or OTT services, while also being useful in crowded areas or emergencies when mobile networks are congested.

However, the service will require a D2M-enabled smartphone. D2M equipment developed by Tejas Networks has reportedly cleared recent government testing, while an IIT Kanpur assessment found no significant interference with mobile signals or excessive smartphone heating.
