Rocky Returns to Indonesia; Will Nandankanan’s Five Infant Orangutans Follow?

Bhubaneswar: The repatriation of Rocky, a young Sumatran orangutan rescued in Gujarat in November 2024, to Indonesia on October 19 has raised questions over the future of five infant orangutans currently housed at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha.

Rocky arrived at Kualanamu Airport in Medan, where officials from the Consulate General of India attended a reception organised by Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry.

In a goodwill gesture, India waived all historical costs incurred for Rocky’s care and maintenance. His return was coordinated by the wildlife authorities and CITES management authorities of both countries in accordance with established procedures.

Meanwhile, the five young orangutans rescued in Odisha in September 2026 are receiving veterinary care and protection at Nandankanan.

Indonesian wildlife experts are expected to visit India in November 2026 to determine the animals’ species and origin, paving the way for a decision on their possible repatriation.

The Indian Embassy in Jakarta said efforts were underway to facilitate their early return, subject to confirmation of their origins and completion of the required formalities.

The proposed repatriation will depend on the experts’ findings and the fulfilment of all necessary procedures.
