Chest Pain Patient Mistakenly Given Anti-Rabies Vaccine at Kendrapara Health Centre

Kendrapara: In a shocking incident, a patient who visited a primary health centre for treatment of chest pain was mistakenly administered an anti-rabies vaccine in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on Wednesday.

The patient, identified as Anant Jena, had gone to the Karilopatna Primary Health Centre after complaining of chest pain. According to reports, he was seated beside another patient who had come to receive an anti-rabies injection.

Amid the rush at the health centre, a pharmacist allegedly confused the patients and administered the anti-rabies vaccine to Jena by mistake.

Shortly after receiving the injection, Jena complained of dizziness and nausea. He immediately alerted the pharmacist, who realised the error and referred him to the Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for observation and further treatment.

Confirming the incident, Dr Sunil Kumar Sahu said the mix-up occurred during a sudden rush at the health centre as a review team from Kendrapara had arrived for inspection. He, however, assured that the anti-rabies vaccine is safe and unlikely to cause any serious side effects.
