Bhubaneswar: The Excise Intelligence Department on Thursday seized 87 grams of brown sugar, valued at around Rs 8.7 lakh, and arrested a suspected drug peddler during a special operation in Cuttack district.
The raid was carried out by the Unit-1 Flying Squad on a village road at Kotasahi under the jurisdiction of Tangi Police Station. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Excise Deputy Superintendent Roshan Isu Hansda following directions from Excise Superintendent Samarjit Das.
The accused, identified as 31-year-old Bharat Kumar Sahu of Kotasahi village, was apprehended after officials allegedly recovered the contraband from his possession.
Following the seizure, a case was registered against him under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Sahu was later produced before the District Judge-cum-Special Judge in Cuttack. The court rejected his bail plea and remanded him to judicial custody.
Excise officials said the investigation is continuing to determine the source of the seized narcotics and identify others who may be involved in the illegal drug network.
