Aparajita Sarangi Urges Odisha Government to Reconsider Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project Halt

Member of Parliament Aparajita Sarangi has urged the Odisha government to reconsider its decision to halt the proposed metro rail project in Bhubaneswar, citing growing public demand and the city’s rapid urban expansion.
In a formal appeal to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Sarangi highlighted the urgent need for a modern, efficient, and inclusive public transport system to address rising traffic congestion in the capital city and its surrounding regions.
Need for Modern Urban Mobility
Sarangi emphasized that Bhubaneswar is witnessing significant population growth and urbanisation. As a result, the existing transport infrastructure is under increasing pressure. She stated that a metro rail system would offer a reliable, safe, and accessible commuting option for all residents, including women, senior citizens, children, and persons with disabilities.
According to her, the metro project is not just a transportation initiative but a long-term investment in sustainable urban development.
Boost to Economy and Tourism
The MP underlined that the metro rail project could act as a catalyst for economic growth. It is expected to generate employment opportunities and attract investments to the region.
She also pointed out that improved connectivity to major landmarks such as Lingaraj Temple, Dhauli, and ISKCON Temple Bhubaneswar would strengthen tourism and enhance the city’s reputation as a modern urban hub.
Concerns Over Financial Implications
Sarangi raised concerns about the financial impact of halting the project. She noted that approximately Rs 274 crore has already been spent. Suspending the project at this stage could result in a loss of public funds and increase costs if the project is revived later.
She added that metro rail systems are long-term infrastructure investments that may not yield immediate profits but deliver substantial social and economic benefits over time.
Call for Reconsideration
In her appeal, Sarangi urged the state government to take into account public sentiment and the long-term advantages of the project. She also expressed willingness to coordinate with the central government to secure additional support and funding.
The proposal to halt the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project has triggered widespread discussion, with many stakeholders advocating for its continuation as a key step toward building a future-ready and sustainable city.
