Gajapati Police Unearth Cannabis Worth Rs 2 Cr

Police in Odisha’s Gajapati district unearthed over two quintals of cannabis buried underground during a major anti-narcotics raid near Bhimanpur village in Nuagada block.
Acting on specific intelligence, SDPO R. Udayagiri Rakesh Kumar Sahu led a joint team from R. Udayagiri Police Station and Chandragiri outpost. Officers recovered 67 plastic sacks filled with cannabis from beneath the soil. An Executive Magistrate supervised the weighing process, confirming a total of 210 kilograms.
Authorities valued the seized cannabis at more than Rs 2 crore. Investigators launched efforts to identify the individuals behind the operation. Police highlighted the growing trend of traffickers using underground concealment in forested and residential areas to evade detection.
Officials revealed that recent enforcement drives across Gajapati district confiscated nearly 11 tonnes of cannabis. The scale of the seizures underscores the entrenched networks operating in the region. Despite frequent raids, large-scale cultivation and trafficking continue to challenge law enforcement.
Police emphasised that traffickers employ innovative methods to stay ahead of enforcement, pointing to the buried contraband as evidence of organised planning.
