Aadhaar Biometric Check Mandatory for LPG Subsidy

The government has made biometric Aadhaar authentication compulsory for domestic LPG consumers seeking subsidised cylinder refills from October 1, 2026.
Under the new requirement, consumers must complete biometric Aadhaar verification to book LPG refills at the regulated retail price and receive the applicable subsidy.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry said the move is aimed at ensuring that subsidised LPG benefits reach only eligible households. Aadhaar-based verification is also expected to help identify duplicate or ineligible connections and curb the diversion of domestic cylinders for commercial and industrial use.
The ministry clarified that the requirement is not intended to deprive genuine consumers of LPG. Customers who have not yet completed the process can authenticate their Aadhaar biometrics during cylinder delivery, by visiting their LPG distributor’s showroom, or through the mobile applications of the respective oil marketing companies.

According to the ministry, 27.43 crore LPG consumers have already completed biometric Aadhaar authentication and do not need to take any further action.
Consumers who are yet to complete the verification have been advised to do so before the October 1 deadline to continue availing themselves of subsidised LPG refills.
