Speeding Scorpio Triggers Chain Collision in Bhubaneswar, One Dead and Six Injured

Bhubaneswar: A fatal road accident rocked Bhubaneswar on Tuesday night after a speeding SUV allegedly ploughed into several motorcycles, leaving one person dead and at least six others seriously injured.

The deceased has been identified as Manas Barik. According to preliminary findings, a black Mahindra Scorpio (registration number OD-07-BG-1777) first struck a two-wheeler near Nuagaon Chhak.

Despite attempts by local residents to stop the vehicle, the SUV allegedly continued speeding and collided with six to seven more motorcycles. The vehicle eventually crashed into a road divider near the main entrance of a private hospital in the Ghatikia area.

Following the incident, angry residents caught hold of the driver and reportedly assaulted him. Police personnel soon arrived at the scene and rescued the driver from the crowd.

Sources indicated that four people were travelling in the SUV and were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. While police apprehended the driver, the other three occupants allegedly escaped from the spot.

Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M visited the accident site and confirmed that an investigation was underway. He said further details would become clear as the investigation progressed.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over road safety in the state capital. Notably, the accident took place just a day after a fourth-year law student allegedly attempted to run over four people with a speeding electric car in another incident in Bhubaneswar.
