IMD Issues Red Alert for Heavy Rain in Odisha; Downpour Likely to Continue Till July 20

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a Red Warning for parts of Odisha on July 16, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in some districts as a low-pressure system is expected to trigger widespread rain across the state over the next few days.
According to the IMD’s latest midday weather bulletin, Jagatsinghpur and Puri are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places, with extremely heavy rain expected at isolated locations on Wednesday.
The weather agency has also issued an Orange Warning for Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Khurda, Nayagarh and Ganjam, where one or two places are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, a Yellow Warning has been issued for Balasore, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Gajapati, with heavy rainfall likely at isolated places.
The rainy spell is expected to persist on July 17, when Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj will remain under an Orange Warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall. A Yellow Warning has been issued for Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Bargarh, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh.
For July 18, the IMD has placed Sambalpur and Angul under an Orange Warning, while Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj and Sonepur are covered under a Yellow Warning for heavy rainfall.
The weather conditions are expected to gradually improve from July 19, with only Yellow Warnings remaining in effect. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Balasore, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on July 19, while Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj may continue to receive heavy showers on July 20.
In view of the forecast, the IMD has urged fishermen not to venture into the sea and advised residents, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by local authorities until the weather system weakens.
