Former Jajpur Clerk Convicted in Bribery Case, Sentenced to Two Years RI

Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Cuttack on Tuesday convicted Laxmidhar Swain, a former Junior Clerk at the Collectorate Office, Jajpur, for accepting a bribe in exchange for issuing a registration certificate under the Societies Registration Act, 1960.

Swain, now retired, was charge-sheeted by the Odisha Vigilance under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for demanding and accepting illegal gratification from a complainant.

The Special Judge, Vigilance, Cuttack, sentenced him to two years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine.

Following the conviction, the Odisha Vigilance Directorate stated that it would approach the competent authority to stop the pension of the convicted official, in keeping with the state government’s zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
