Hirakud Dam Releases Floodwater, Eco-Retreat to Open in November

Bhubaneswar: Due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, the Hirakud Dam has opened four additional gates, bringing the total number of open gates to 14. The dam is currently releasing 1,33,053 cusecs of water, with the reservoir level recorded at 626.23 feet and an inflow of 2,15,644 cusecs. Authorities have advised residents of low-lying areas to exercise caution and avoid venturing into the riverbed during the floodwater release.

In a positive development for tourists, the Hirakud reservoir is set to offer a refreshed experience from November 15 with the launch of an eco-retreat on Jamadarpali Island. Scheduled to run until February 12, the retreat will feature a floating restaurant and resort, water sports, cruise services, and boat houses, enhancing the scenic beauty and recreational appeal of the reservoir.

This dual scenario highlights both the challenges posed by the heavy rains and the opportunities for tourism development at Hirakud.
