Women Lead Public Transport Shift on Odisha Yatri Platform

Bhubaneswar: In a major boost for gender-inclusive urban mobility, women have emerged as the dominant users of the Odisha Yatri platform, accounting for 57.44% of total passengers between October 2024 and July 2025.

Out of 2.57 lakh commuters, over 1.48 lakh were women, highlighting how the app has enhanced safety, accessibility, and trust in public transport.

Launched by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in January 2025, with pilot operations beginning in October 2024, the platform has consistently attracted more women riders. Female ridership peaked at 61.63% in January 2025, while still holding a majority at 55.38% in July 2025.

Transport officials credit this trend to the app’s core features — verified drivers, real-time trip tracking, stronger last-mile connectivity, and an effective grievance redressal system. Its integration with enforcement and transport authorities has reinforced accountability, making commuting safer for women and other vulnerable groups.

“The data speaks for itself — women are not just participating; they are leading the adoption of Odisha Yatri. This reflects the government’s strong commitment to gender-responsive, inclusive transport,” said Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department.

Beyond daily commuting, Odisha Yatri has also demonstrated its community focus. In partnership with the State Transport Authority, it provided free auto rides to over 30,000 pilgrims during the Puri Ratha Yatra this year.

Looking ahead, the platform plans to expand into more cities, and introduce ambulance and boating services, further cementing its role in inclusive mobility.

As Odisha moves towards a safer and smarter transport ecosystem, the growing female ridership stands as a symbol of trust, dignity, and security in public services.
