Sugar Stock Rules Tightened

The government has tightened sugar stock limits for dealers to curb hoarding and ensure adequate supplies during the festive season. Under the revised rules, dealers can hold sugar for up to 15 days, with the stock limit set at 1,000 quintals, effective from October 15 until November.

For Kolkata and its extended metropolitan areas, as well as Assam, the limit has been raised to 2,000 quintals due to supply and transportation requirements.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry said retail sugar prices have fallen 15% from their August peak, while ex-mill prices have dropped around 28%. Wholesalers and retailers have been asked to pass on the benefit of lower prices to consumers.
