Odisha Now Maoist-Free After Three Decades, Says DGP Khurania

Rourkela: Odisha has become completely Maoist-free after nearly three decades of insurgency, Director General of Police Y. B. Khurania said on Friday, describing it as a “significant milestone” for the state.
Speaking to mediapersons after attending a medal award ceremony at the Civic Centre in Rourkela, the DGP said the achievement reflects years of sustained efforts by the state police and security forces. The event, organised by the Western Range Police, honoured personnel for their distinguished service.

Khurania, however, cautioned that Maoist presence in neighbouring states continues to pose a concern. He said Odisha Police and other security agencies are maintaining strict vigil along interstate border areas to prevent any possible resurgence.
Calling it a major breakthrough, the DGP noted that the elimination of Maoist activity marks the beginning of a new phase in policing in the state.
Highlighting emerging challenges, Khurania said cybercrime has now become a major area of concern. He revealed that during cybercrime drives conducted between January and February, more than 45,000 bank accounts were scrutinised. Notices were issued to over 7,000 individuals, and around 350 cybercriminals were arrested as part of the crackdown.
He added that public awareness campaigns are being intensified to educate citizens about online fraud and digital safety.
To further strengthen enforcement, the DGP announced that dedicated cybercrime and economic offences units will be established in all major district offices within the next year.
Khurania also said the police have launched an extensive anti-drug campaign from April 1, 2026, aiming to make Odisha drug-free over the next three years. He noted that the campaign will continue across the state as part of ongoing efforts to curb substance abuse.
