Odisha CM Orders Probe Into Orangutan Smuggling Case

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has ordered a detailed investigation into how five baby orangutans reached Baleshwar district, stressing that the state will not be allowed to become a transit route for illegal wildlife trafficking.

The five orangutans were rescued from a jungle in Baleshwar on Tuesday, raising concerns over the possible involvement of an organised wildlife trafficking network. Although Majhi is currently on a five-day business visit to the UAE, the Chief Minister’s Office said he has been closely monitoring the developments.
Majhi directed officials to establish the route through which the rare animals were brought into Odisha, determine how they entered the state, identify those involved in their transportation and ascertain the purpose for which they were brought.

“Odisha will never be allowed to serve as a transit route for the illegal trafficking of exotic wildlife,” Majhi said, warning that any network involved would be identified and strict legal action taken.
The Chief Minister also instructed authorities to coordinate the investigation with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) and other central agencies.
Meanwhile, officials have been directed to ensure that the rescued orangutans receive proper medical treatment, security and care in accordance with wildlife protection protocols while the probe continues.
