Odisha Braces for Heavy Rain, IMD Warns of Possible Depression

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a multi-day weather alert for Odisha, forecasting heavy rainfall and the likely formation of a depression over the Bay of Bengal later this week.

A low-pressure area over the northeast Bay of Bengal is expected to move west-northwest in the next 24 hours. Another system is likely to develop around September 25, intensifying into a depression by September 26, and may make landfall along South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh around September 27.

The IMD has issued colour-coded warnings for all districts:

  • Sept 22–23: Orange alert for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sundargarh, and Sambalpur; Yellow alert for most other districts.
  • Sept 24–26: Orange warnings for Koraput and Malkangiri, indicating the storm’s projected path.
  • Sept 27–28: Yellow alerts for isolated heavy rain in western districts.

Authorities warn of crop damage, flooding, waterlogging, traffic disruption, and possible landslides. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and not take shelter under trees. Coastal residents should be ready to move to safer areas if needed.

Fishermen Alert: Strong winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are expected along and off the Odisha coast from Sept 22–26. Fishermen are strongly urged not to venture into the sea during this period.
