Odisha Braces for Heatwave from April 18 to 20

Odisha continues to reel under intense heat as the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, issued a warning for hot and humid conditions across 13 coastal districts for the next two days.
The alert covers districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Khordha, Puri, Nayagarh, and Ganjam. Meteorologists advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and stay hydrated.
Officials said temperatures have soared above normal in several parts of coastal Odisha, with humidity levels adding to discomfort. The department also forecast isolated thunderstorms with lightning in some areas, urging caution for outdoor workers and farmers.
The heatwave warning extends from April 18 to April 20 for coastal, western, and southern Odisha. District administrations have been asked to prepare cooling shelters and ensure water availability in public areas.
Health authorities advised people to wear light clothing, consume plenty of fluids, and avoid strenuous activities during peak afternoon hours. Schools and workplaces may adjust schedules to minimise exposure.
Meteorologists noted that the combination of high temperature and humidity could lead to heat stress, especially among vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
The Regional Meteorological Centre continues to monitor conditions closely and will update forecasts as needed.
