Odisha Assembly Speaker Rejects Congress’ No-Confidence Motion Against BJP Govt

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy has rejected a notice submitted by the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) seeking a no-confidence motion against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

The CLP had filed the notice on September 18, the opening day of the Monsoon Session, accusing the BJP government of failing to address key issues, including crime against women, the farm sector crisis, unemployment, and the exploitation of Dalits and Adivasi communities.

In an attempt to strengthen its move, Congress had urged the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), the principal opposition party in the state, to support the motion. Earlier, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das had also appealed to the BJD to take the lead in bringing a no-confidence motion against the BJP.

“Being the main opposition party in Odisha, the BJD should bring the non-confidence motion. Otherwise, we will move the motion and they should support us in this regard,” Das had said.

With the Speaker’s rejection of the notice, the Congress’ attempt to corner the BJP government through a no-confidence motion has hit a roadblock.
