Normalcy Returns to Sundargarh After Two Days of Tension; Six Arrested

Sundargarh: Life in Sundargarh town is gradually returning to normal after two days of tension triggered by a violent clash between two groups in the Regent Market area over a rumour related to beef possession.

Police have arrested six persons from both sides in connection with the incident and produced them in court. Searches are underway to nab other suspects, while police patrols have been intensified to maintain law and order.

According to officials, shops and markets have reopened, schools and colleges are functioning normally, and vehicular movement has resumed across the town. Internet services have also been restored, and all prohibitory restrictions were lifted on Friday after the district administration reviewed the law-and-order situation.

The prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were withdrawn following a peace committee meeting. Although the town remains largely calm, police continue to maintain a strong presence and are closely monitoring the situation.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nirmal Mohapatra said, “As many as six persons have been arrested on the basis of evidence and produced in court. Efforts are on to identify others responsible for the law-and-order situation in Sundargarh. As per law, action will be taken against them. The situation is now normal, and we are closely monitoring it. We urge the people of Sundargarh to remain calm.”

Authorities have appealed to residents to maintain peace and cooperate with the administration to ensure continued normalcy in the town.
