Ninth HIV-positive inmate detected at Jharpada special jail

Bhubaneswar: The number of HIV-infected prisoners has reached nine at the Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar with another inmate testing positive.
This ninth HIV-infected prisoner was lodged at the Jharpada Special Jail by court from Khandagiri police in a theft case when he was produced before a court in connection with his arrest.
He tested HIV positive during the routine checkup that is made obligatory for the inmates, especially for the ones newly admitted.
Following his detection to be a HIV-infected inmate, he was admitted to isolation and put under medication and observation by the jail authorities, the jail sources said.
According to reports, the jail authorities are making all necessary arrangements so that no inmate could be the victim of any kind of ailment.
The inmates, particularly the new ones are subject to medical examination from time to time to ensure that no communicable diseases can find place in the prison inmates.
It has been informed that HIV-infected prisoners are being provided with appropriate treatment and monitoring, said a jail official.
