Monsoon Stalls in Odisha; Heatwave Conditions to Prevail Across State

Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon, which had been gradually advancing through Odisha, has now stalled and is unlikely to progress further over the next 5–7 days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This development is expected to bring extended dry spells and intensifying heatwave conditions across the state.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra confirmed that although the monsoon has covered parts of southern Odisha, it will not advance in the coming week due to unfavourable atmospheric conditions. Despite the stall, the monsoon is still considered to have “advanced” into the state.

Regional Meteorological Centre Director Manorama Mohanty reiterated that there will be little to no rainfall across most parts of Odisha, with only isolated areas likely to receive showers. As a result, heatwave conditions are expected to grip much of the state, particularly in coastal and interior districts.
Cities likely to be most affected include Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati. Rising temperatures and high humidity are expected to make conditions increasingly uncomfortable for residents.
Monday marked one of the hottest days in recent weeks, with temperatures soaring close to 40°C in at least 14 cities. Balasore recorded the highest at 39.8°C, followed by Bhubaneswar at 39.6°C. Other cities like Baripada, Talcher, Paralakhemundi, and Cuttack reported 39.4°C, while Hirakud and Sambalpur saw temperatures reach 39.1°C. Bhadrak also recorded a high of 39°C.
With the monsoon’s progress halted, IMD officials have advised the public to take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
