Mission Suraksha 2026: 150 Platoons Deployed for New Year Security Across 7 Districts

From Puri’s sea beach to Jajpur’s heritage sites, Odisha Police roll out a multi-layered security grid with elite units, marine patrols and round-the-clock surveillance to ensure incident-free celebrations.

Puri/Cuttack:With lakhs of devotees and tourists expected to throng major religious, coastal and picnic destinations, the Odisha Police has put in place an extensive security framework for New Year 2026 under “Mission Suraksha 2026.” The plan, finalised under the direct supervision of DIG Central Range Dr Satyajit Naik, IPS, covers seven key districts—Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur—with a clear mandate of zero tolerance towards lawlessness.

Massive Deployment as Force Multiplier

To manage the surge in footfall and maintain public order, the Central Range has authorised the deployment of 150 police platoons across sensitive locations. Specialised units including ODRAF, Special Tactical Unit (STU) and 179 trained lifeguards have been positioned for emergency response and water safety. High-footfall areas such as Puri Beach and Kantilo Nilamadhab are under enhanced surveillance through high-definition CCTV cameras and drone monitoring.

District-Wise Strategic Focus

The security strategy includes the creation of district-specific safety zones.

  • Coastal Security: Intensified marine patrolling at Puri Blue Flag Beach, Paradeep and Siali Sea Beach.
  • Religious Sites: Special crowd regulation arrangements at Shri Jagannath Temple (Puri), Biraja Temple (Jajpur) and Baldevjee Temple (Kendrapara).
  • Eco-Tourism Areas: Heightened vigilance in Chilika (Khordha) and Bhitarkanika (Kendrapara) to prevent public nuisance and protect wildlife zones.

Road Safety and Zero-Drunk Driving Drive

To curb New Year road mishaps, the Central Range Police has launched a stringent traffic enforcement campaign. Round-the-clock breathalyser checks, pre-notified one-way traffic routes, dedicated parking zones near picnic spots, and highway interceptor patrols using bikes and vans have been deployed to ensure smooth and safe travel.

Crime Prevention and Public Safety

A strict zero-tolerance policy has been enforced against antisocial activities. Anti-harassment squads, including plainclothes women police personnel, are being deployed to safeguard women and children. Simultaneously, police have intensified checks against illegal parties, narcotics, contraband and unlawful liquor sales.

For emergencies, 24/7 help desks and control rooms are operational to handle missing person reports and provide immediate medical assistance.

DIG’s Message

“Our primary objective for New Year 2026 is to balance the joy of celebration with the sanctity of law. From the riverfronts of Cuttack to the beaches of Puri, our officers are on the ground to ensure every citizen feels safe,” said Dr Satyajit Naik, IPS, DIG Central Range, appealing to the public to celebrate responsibly and cooperate with law enforcement.

Appeal to Citizens

Police have urged citizens and visitors to strictly follow traffic advisories, avoid venturing into deep waters at beaches and riverfronts, and promptly report any suspicious activity or harassment to the nearest police help desk.

With Mission Suraksha 2026 in full force, the Central Range Police aims to ensure peaceful, secure and incident-free New Year celebrations across Odisha’s most visited destinations.
