MEA Expresses Grief Over Nepali Student’s Death at KIIT

Bhubaneswar: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a Nepali girl student at KIIT Deemed University in Odisha’s capital. The ministry has also extended condolences to the bereaved family.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of a Nepali student at KIIT in Bhubaneswar. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. The Government of India accords high priority to the safety, security, and well-being of all international students in the country,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in New Delhi on Friday.

The MEA has been in constant communication with the Odisha government and KIIT authorities since the incident came to light. Additionally, it has maintained close coordination with Nepalese authorities.

According to the MEA, both the state government and KIIT administration have taken several steps to address the situation. The police have arrested multiple individuals, including one student accused in the case.

“The Odisha government has constituted a fact-finding committee to investigate the incident, and appropriate legal action will be taken based on its findings. The Bhubaneswar police have also issued a helpline number for Nepali students at KIIT. Furthermore, steps have been taken to bring back Nepali students who had left the university following the incident,” Jaiswal stated.

The MEA reaffirmed that the Government of India will continue to ensure the safety and well-being of all Nepali students in the country.

The incident occurred when a third-year BTech student from Nepal allegedly died by suicide at KIIT after reportedly facing harassment from a fellow student. Following the tragedy, protests erupted on the campus, with Nepali students demanding justice. In response, the university administration asked them to vacate the campus.

Taking the matter seriously, Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli urged both the Union and Odisha governments to take appropriate action to address the issue.
