Low-Pressure Likely Over Andaman Sea

Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area is likely to form over the South Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours and may intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 24, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.
Weather scientist Uma Shankar Das, in an update on X, stated that a cyclonic circulation over the Malacca Strait is persisting and extending up to 5.8 km above sea level. “This is likely to lead to the formation of a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea within the next 24 hours. It is expected to intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal by November 24, moving west-northwest. Further intensification is possible over the southwest Bay of Bengal within the next 48 hours,” he said.

However, experts remain uncertain whether the system will eventually develop into a cyclonic storm. Multiple forecast models have been analysed to determine its track and intensity, but no definitive projection has emerged so far.
Amid these predictions, farmers across Odisha are growing increasingly anxious. With paddy crops now mature and standing in the fields, they fear that any cyclone or heavy rainfall at this stage could cause severe damage just ahead of the harvest season.
