Jharsuguda Sizzles Under Severe Heatwave; No Relief Likely Till May 24

Bhubaneswar: Western Odisha’s Jharsuguda is reeling under an intense and prolonged heatwave, with soaring temperatures and unusually warm nights making life extremely difficult for residents. The scorching conditions have severely affected daily routines, forcing many people to remain indoors to escape the blistering heat.

The ongoing heatwave has brought Jharsuguda close to its highest-ever May temperatures recorded in history. The town had witnessed 48°C on May 28, 1998, 47.6°C on May 24, 1998, 47.5°C on May 20, 1978, and 47°C on May 31, 2024.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that there is unlikely to be any respite from the severe heatwave conditions across Odisha until May 24.

The weather department has issued a ‘severe heatwave’ alert for Sambalpur and Balangir districts from Thursday onwards. In addition, night temperatures in Sambalpur, Balangir, and Sundargarh are expected to remain above normal, adding to public discomfort.

Meanwhile, coastal Odisha is also experiencing oppressive weather conditions. Although daytime temperatures in the region are hovering between 36°C and 38°C, humidity levels exceeding 70 per cent are making it feel as high as 50°C, causing severe discomfort during both day and night.

Amid the prevailing heatwave, the Odisha government has advised people to avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 3 pm, remain hydrated, and take extra care of children, elderly persons, and those suffering from illnesses.

With no immediate signs of relief, the severe summer conditions are expected to continue across the state over the next few days.
