Contract Worker Dies After Fall at Rourkela Steel Plant, Probe Ordered

Rourkela: A contractual worker died following an accident at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on Saturday, triggering an internal probe by the authorities.

The deceased has been identified as 54-year-old Prakash Swain, a resident of the Bali Jodi area. He was engaged in work at the Calcining Plant-2 (CP-2) unit of RSP.

According to sources, the incident occurred at around 4:20 PM while Swain was cleaning roof sheets in the CP-2 section. He reportedly slipped and fell from a height of nearly 20 feet. He was immediately rushed to the plant’s in-house medical centre and later shifted to Ispat General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

RSP officials stated that Swain was found in an unconscious condition at the site and was promptly provided medical assistance. However, in the absence of any eyewitnesses, the exact circumstances leading to the accident are yet to be established.

Following the incident, a high-level committee has been constituted to investigate the matter. Based on preliminary findings, two officials have been suspended in connection with the case.

Expressing grief over the worker’s death, RSP Director-in-Charge Alok Verma assured that all possible support would be extended to the bereaved family.
