BMC to Issue Notices to Establishments Lacking Adequate Parking Facilities

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to take stringent action against hospitals, commercial establishments and offices that are operating without proper parking infrastructure. The civic body will soon begin issuing notices, directing such establishments to create adequate parking spaces within their premises.
The decision was announced after a corporation meeting on Wednesday. BMC Mayor Sulochana Das said the move is aimed at reducing traffic congestion across key stretches of the city. She added that the corporation will work in coordination with the Commissionerate Police to identify nearby public spaces that can be used for parking, especially in areas designated as no-parking zones.

Das noted that although major stretches are being marked as no-parking zones to reduce traffic snarls, implementation will be done only after suitable alternative parking areas are mapped out. “Many corporators pointed out that vehicles have no place to go once these zones are enforced. We will take this up with the government and work with the Commissionerate Police to identify feasible public spots,” she said.
The mayor also highlighted that several hospitals, restaurants and commercial complexes have been operating without providing sufficient parking facilities, pushing visitors to park on the roadside. She cited instances where hospital staff vehicles received priority inside campuses while the public was forced to park outside. Notices will now be issued to such establishments, and large hospitals will be instructed to build multi-level parking structures.
Das further informed that the long-delayed multi-level parking project at Unit-VI will be fast-tracked. According to BMC officials, completing this facility and ensuring that private establishments comply with parking norms will be crucial steps toward reducing roadside congestion in the capital city.
