Bhitarkanika Bird Census from Jan 18

Rajnagar: The much-awaited bird census in Bhitarkanika will begin on January 18, covering five ranges: Rajnagar, Kanika, Gahirmatha, Mahakalpada, and Kujanga in the Rajnagar Forest Division. A training camp for ornithologists and forest officials will take place on January 17 before the census commences.

Last year, 1,51,421 birds from 121 species were recorded, and this year, authorities expect an increase in bird numbers, according to Rajnagar Forest Officer Sudarshan Gopinath Yadav.

In related news, the Bhitarkanika National Park will remain closed from January 14 to January 22 for the annual saltwater crocodile census, which will be carried out across four forest ranges of Rajnagar.
