India Remembers Indira Gandhi on Her 42nd Death Anniversary

New Delhi: India today remembers former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 42nd death anniversary, marking the legacy of the country’s first woman Prime Minister.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by her security personnel at her residence in New Delhi. Her assassination remains a significant event in India’s political history.
Born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, she was the daughter of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. She became India’s first woman Prime Minister in 1966 and served from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984.
Her tenure witnessed several major developments, including the 1971 India-Pakistan War, the liberation of Bangladesh, bank nationalisation and the Green Revolution. However, her government also faced widespread criticism over the imposition of the Emergency from 1975 to 1977, during which civil liberties were curtailed.
Tributes are being paid across the country to mark her death anniversary.
