Manipur CM Seeks Resignation of Congress MP After JNU Dismissal Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

New Delhi: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Saturday demanded the resignation of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) dismissed him from service following an inquiry into sexual harassment allegations.
In a post on Facebook and X, the Chief Minister termed the development “deeply disturbing and shameful” and said Akoijam had lost the moral authority to continue as a public representative.
Singh said the university’s Internal Committee had investigated the allegations and recommended major punishment. He urged the Inner Manipur MP to resign from the Lok Sabha, citing the need to uphold Parliament’s dignity and public trust.
According to an order issued by JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit on Friday, Akoijam, a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, was dismissed with immediate effect following the inquiry and due process under the applicable service rules.
Media reports said at least 11 female students had lodged sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam in May, alleging inappropriate conduct and remarks. The specific findings of the inquiry were not available in the report.
Akoijam’s response to the dismissal and allegations was not available at the time of filing this report.
