Police Foil Alleged Robbery Plot in Jharsuguda; Suspect Injured in Exchange of Fire

Jharsuguda: A suspected criminal was injured in a police encounter while allegedly planning an armed robbery under the Rengali police station limits in Jharsuguda district on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Jay Chauhan of Gandhi Chowk in Brajrajnagar, sustained a bullet injury to his right leg during an exchange of fire with the police. He was immediately shifted to the Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
According to police sources, Jay Chauhan and his associates were allegedly preparing to execute a major robbery in the Rengali area. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a special police team conducted a raid at the suspected location.
As the police team approached, the accused reportedly attempted to flee and opened fire on the officers. In response and in self-defence, the police retaliated. During the exchange of gunfire, Jay Chauhan was shot in the right leg and fell to the ground, while one of his accomplices managed to escape from the spot.
Police said efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the absconding associate.
Jay Chauhan is reportedly a habitual offender with more than 10 criminal cases registered against him at various police stations. The cases include charges of attempt to murder, dacoity, extortion and offences under the Arms Act.
Further investigation into the incident is in progress.
