Youth Critical After Self-Immolation Attempt in Berhampur

Berhampur: In yet another shocking incident of self-immolation in Odisha, a youth from Berhampur is battling for life after allegedly setting himself on fire at Methu Chhak under Bada Bazar police limits on Tuesday.
The victim, identified as Suraj Sahu, sustained nearly 80% burn injuries. Police rushed to the spot and rescued him before shifting him to the burn ward of MKCG Medical College and Hospital. As his condition worsened, he was later referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, where he remains critical.
Senior officials, including the Berhampur SP, visited both the incident site and the hospital to take stock of the situation.
The exact reason behind the youth’s drastic step is still unclear. Preliminary investigation revealed that Suraj had posted a cryptic message on Instagram shortly before the act, stating: “If something happens to me, no one is responsible.”
Police have registered a case and are questioning Suraj’s family members to ascertain the circumstances that may have triggered the extreme act.
