13-Year-Old Boy Dies After Krait Snake Bite While Sleeping in Nabarangpur

Nabarangpur: A tragic snakebite incident claimed the life of a 13-year-old boy in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district on Wednesday, despite efforts to save him at multiple healthcare facilities.
The deceased, identified as Sameer Santa of Dumuripadar village under Palia Panchayat in Jharigaon block, was reportedly bitten by a krait snake while sleeping at his residence on Tuesday night.
According to family members, Sameer had retired for the night after dinner and was sleeping on a mat laid on the floor when the snake allegedly bit him on the ear. Startled by the sudden pain, the boy woke up and alerted his family, saying that something had bitten him.
Upon searching the sleeping area, family members discovered a krait snake concealed within the mat. They managed to capture the reptile and immediately rushed Sameer to the Community Health Centre at Papadahandi for treatment.
As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to the District Headquarters Hospital in Nabarangpur for specialised medical care. However, despite receiving treatment, the boy could not be saved and died around noon on Wednesday.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the village, with residents expressing concern over the increasing risk of snakebite cases during the monsoon season. Authorities have urged people to remain cautious and ensure proper safety measures while sleeping, especially in rural areas where snake encounters are common.
